Riv-nut or Nutsert revisited

rivenut2-1

rivenut2-2

This is my follow up post to these remarkable pieces of hardware. The goal is to educate those in the DIY and car modification community of the superior fit and finish, nutserts give to your projects. Not to mention they standardize your hardware and a benefit is your repairs are now much faster to complete. For example, I mentioned in my first nutsert post you no longer are awkwardly trying to screw together a nut and bolt in a tight space like between the radiator support.

Now let me show you how I used nutserts for another repair.

nutsert-4

What the heck is this dumb junk right, these are nutserts. When would I use them, when your like geez I would really like a threaded hole with out welding a nut into thin or heavy sheet metal. Why would I use them, if you would like to have a clean and long lastly solution to adding a threading hole to sheet metal and yes fiberglass. Let me show you how use them.

240sx Fix up: Bumper Braces

Many people when they see my 240 say “That’s a nice car, you’re lucky”, lucky!? Most of the time I grin and say ‘thanks’ but what it all comes down to is a lot of hard work and up keep. These 240 fix up post will show that a car isn’t built only once and doesn’t need maintenance like what it seems all the forum posts lead you to believe. These bumper braces I built years ago that keep my bumper from bouncing around needed a refresh so with a better understanding of fabrication techniques and skills, I was able to rebuild these in a few hours.

What I ended up with:

Read on to see how I did it.

DIY Rope Chainsaw in use

This is an update to the original post DIY Rope Chainsaw, when taking a look at the blogs stats the rope chainsaw post almost always has a more than a few views a day (like more than 10 views per day). So, making the rope chainsaw and the post did not just help me but at least helped a few people. Here is a videos of it in use, cutting on an angle and showing that it could be operated with two people and how fast it cuts. Some background, the section of the tree we are cutting is about 20 – 25ft up and it is a bit rotted, also I started filming when the trunk was 50% cut.

Duct Tape Wrapping a Welding Helmet

helmet-1

It was a rainy day so instead of wasting time on the internet, I decided to give my welding helmet a face lift.  In case you are wondering this is the Harbor Freight auto-darkening helmet with the blue flame stickers removed. This took maybe an hour to finish but if I add in taking pictures an hour and a half. Quick review on the helmet, it is reliable enough to the point where I would do this to it and it’s response time in darkening is what I need for hobbyist fabricating. Below you will see the end results and I am pleased with it.

Follow along as I show you the process of what I did or just look at the pictures if you like. A lot of people are more crafty than I am, I just want to inspire a few people that are maybe a little unclear on what they should do.

Cars and Copters 2013: Part 1

Cars and Copters is an annual car meet/show in support of the Jimmy Fund, held at the Plymouth Airport in Massachusetts. This was our fourth time going but first time I went without Minh and little Jayden. This year it seemed bigger and it was nice that a good portion of the cars were on the black top making it much easier to walk around and the pictures come out better too. Taking picture of lowered/low cars on grass look weird, they are out of their element like a boat on land. The traffic was crazy this year because we were shuffled off to the back of the airport but it was the first time it was held at that part of the airport so they will most likely have it down for next year.

This is just part 1, I have another 40 pics for part 2 so come back and enjoy the gallery.

Import Evolution: Torque Meet

This is the set of pictures that I took when I went to Import Evolution’s meet held at UTI once again on 8/24/13. This time I noticed a much stronger presence by UTI than the last meet that was held there. They had more booth space and more of their own people walking around.

If you have not been to an Import Evolution show or meet, I can tell you they are much organized than other people who are putting on meets and shows. Also they try to make it worth your while whether you are showing or spectating.

Phantom Gourmet BBQ Beach Party

The Phantom Gourmet BBQ Beach Party is an event where they bring in seven championship BBQ masters and a whole bunch of sand to Boston’s city hall and chow down on some great BBQ. In the over 21 section of the event they made a large sand pit, that would have been better if the sand was in front of the stage instead of being where the tables with umbrellas where.
