Ipad Mini Dash Kit for Lexus IS250: Preview

radio1 copy

Here is a rendering I made of an Ipad mini installed into an IS250.This is the preview to kind a convince Mihn to let me do this to his car but also let people know what some of our plans are for 2013. The picture above is going to differ from the final product because the perspective of the Ipad is wrong but it will baller status when it is done. Below is the picture of what it looks like from the factory(cluttered and ugly). The problem is no one has done this before, I will give you time to check(go now), why? When you install an aftermarket radio into this car the HVAC and other controls stop working. My promise, is that the steering wheel controls and temperature controls will work, also 2 channel Bluetooth will connect a phone and the Ipad mini.

Here is the plan to position the current controls and organize the layout, I will go the electrical plan in another post.

  • Remove the radio display and information panel because with the radio removed it does not work.
  • Move the hazard and clock to where the radio was. (Most people just put another head unit there)
  • Fiberglass a pan for the opening left by the removed panels.(build in magnets)
  • Use the Ipads’  factory magnetic contact points to keep the Ipad from falling out and let it be removable.

The HVAC circuitry for the IS 250 is actually in the CD Changer .. Did this research already. You’re gonna want to build an enclosure for that circuitry which you’ll probably have to dremel out .. Otherwise, no heating or AC for you … Check the clublexus forums as some people have done other solutions ..

yes sir, we do know that, we are active on CL, we’ve been planning it for quite some time and will try to attempt. at CES this year schoshe had on display a radio dash kit that took care of all of it bit it looked wicked ugly..lol

there hasnt been a complete solution to the hvac without the cd player being in the car still but we’ll attempt this spring/summer. plan on buying extra climate controls and radio

Good luck sir. I did a FlyAudio unit with the ashtray mod that I saw on CL (for the iPhone). I have my original top half (the changer is still in the car as per the harnesses/ compatibility).

The thing is, I NEVER use my CD player anymore.. And to be honest, I wanna see if I can get those heating controls moved down, and an ipad put above the heating controls (just below the vents)

For control, I saw on Soundwaves Tampa, they got a Sony CDX-GS500R head unit and installed it behind the ipad and you can control it with Sony App remote (as long as its connected via the dock connector). Look on YouTube for “VW ipad Soundwaves Tampa” if you haven’t seen it already (you probably have).

I might go that route as the Bluetooth compatibility would be amazing. If I’m doing all this, wondering if the dock could be on a swivel so that whoever is sitting shotgun could watch a movie/FaceTime LOL

We will keep everyone up to date when we start building the dash kit. It will be mostly be done in multiple parts so if you want see how we did that one part and make your own modified version of the dash kit you can.

Was this ever done? I’m thinking about doing this to my 2009 Lexus RX350.

I want to do this to my IS250 so bad! I love that this is removable. I’ll get an iPad mini 4g and watch tv with the xfinity app.
